Big News: Emily the Rescued Highway
Goat Has Given Birth!

July 26, 2025

She was abandoned and pregnant, standing alone by a busy Maui highway. Today, she’s a proud mama of three.

Emily the goat, who was recently rescued on the Kuihelani Highway and brought to safety by Maui Humane Society Officer Emily Skidmore, has just given birth to three healthy babies at Leilani Farm Sanctuary.

The tiny kids — two boys and one girl — were born inside a quiet barn filled with hay and soft straw at the Sanctuary. The newborn babies, barely the size of cats, are doing well. Emily is devotedly nursing her kids and keeping them close.

“After everything she’s been through, Emily’s peaceful delivery is a beautiful full-circle moment,” said Laurelee Blanchard, founder and president of Leilani Farm Sanctuary. “She went from being abandoned and in danger to raising her babies in safety, surrounded by love and the highest level of care.”

Emily first made headlines after a Good Samaritan spotted her wandering near speeding cars by the sunflower fields. Officer Skidmore of the Maui Humane Society responded quickly, bringing the frightened goat to safety. When no one came forward to claim her, the Sanctuary became her forever home.

Now, Emily and her kids are bonding in their own space at the Sanctuary, where they’ll remain together as a family, a rare and precious thing in animal rescue. Once they’re ready, they’ll join the rest of the goat herd on the lush grounds of the Sanctuary, alongside chickens, pigs, deer, and other rescued animals.

The baby girl has been named Laura, in honor of the motorist who pulled over on the highway and notified the Humane Society.

“This is why our partnership with Leilani Farm Sanctuary is so critical,” said Nikki Russell, Chief of Operations at the Maui Humane Society. “Emily’s story could have ended very differently. Instead, she’s thriving, and her babies are safe. This is the kind of outcome every animal deserves.”
