From Highway Rescue to Sanctuary Star: Pregnant Goat "Emily" Finds Safety and a New Life on Maui

July 11, 2025

She was spotted along the busy Kuihelani Highway alone and very pregnant. Now she’s safe, cared for, loved, and named in honor of the Maui Humane Society officer who saved her.

A good Samaritan spotted the goat near the sunflower fields with cars speeding by. Worried that the animal would be struck by a car, she waited there until help arrived. Officer Emily Skidmore of the Maui Humane Society responded quickly, securing the frightened goat and bringing her to safety.

No one came forward to claim her at the Maui Humane Society, so the pregnant goat was brought to Leilani Farm Sanctuary, a nonprofit in Haiku that provides lifelong care for rescued animals.

“Emily’s story is both heartbreaking and hopeful,” said Laurelee Blanchard, founder and president of Leilani Farm Sanctuary. “She was discarded and left in danger, but now she’ll live out her life in peace, and so will her babies. The family will always be together.”

Emily the goat, jet black beauty with a sweet and friendly personality, will give birth in a private straw-filled barn. She and her kids will play in their own paddock until they are ready to join the goat herd.

“I am extremely grateful for our lifesaving partnership with Leilani Farm Sanctuary, which is invaluable to the animals of Maui,” comments Nikki Russell, Chief of Operations, Maui Humane Society. “LFS is our only on-island transfer partner able to welcome in non-companion animals like Emily the goat, who would have had nowhere else to go.

“On the beautiful sanctuary grounds, Emily and her kids will live harmoniously with other goats and various species,” adds Russell. "Working alongside LFS ensures that animals of all species get the compassionate care they deserve.”
